DVWB was delighted to be able to play at a very special event on Sunday 8th May in Heanor, to commemorate the actions of William Gregg. He was born in Heanor in 1890 and during World War 1 fought in the 13th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade. For his bravery in the trenches in Northern France on the 8th May 1918 Sergeant Gregg was awarded the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award for bravery awarded to the British armed forces. Members of William Gregg’s family and relatives of others from his company were also present to hear the citation during a short service, at which a commemorative stone was also unveiled.
